For newer homes (0–15 years)
Look for early signs of movement. Small cracks at drywall seams near corners, doors that begin to stick, or windows that don’t close smoothly are common first clues.
Inspect the garage slab, stoops, and any recent additions for differential settling or slight separations at connections.
Check exterior siding and trim for gaps where materials meet; caulking and flashing can fail after a winter’s weather.

Inspect basements and attics closely: look for deflection in beams, spliced or undersized members, and evidence of chronic moisture or insect damage.

What to look for, housewide
Vertical and horizontal cracks: small hairline cracks are normal; widening, stair-step cracks, or cracks that recur after repair should be evaluated.
